Awards

In 2020, Center for Council received the Innovations in Corrections Award from the American Correctional Association (ACA). The award acknowledged the Council for Insight, Compassion & Resilience (formerly the Inmate Council Program), a six-month intervention where participating incarcerated individuals are trained to facilitate council sessions for their peers, empowering them to become positive agents of change, on the yard, and in their lives. The program launched in 2013 at Salinas Valley State Prison and has now expanded to serve thousands of incarcerated individuals across the state. CICR has now grown to 29 California prisons and has supported many individuals who have received grants of parole as a result of transformation they credit this program with fostering. Watch this video of recent graduates of this program reflecting on its impact and about the ACA Innovation in Corrections Award here.
