offerings for
system-impacted individuals and families

The repercussions of violence and incarceration are experienced not just by directly-involved individuals, but by entire communities. System-impacted families are experiencing immense trauma, stress, and uncertainty. The council practice is a powerful tool to engage families and create patterns for healthy communication, genuine understanding, connection, and healing.

To learn more about the power of family council circles, read Sam’s story, or participate in a Social Connection Council.
Learn more about our Council for Compassion, Insight and Resilience (CICR) program, supporting incarcerated folks in prisons and jails throughout California to learn and practice council in community.
Explore our new Council Reentry Program (CRP), serving populations returning to the Los Angeles area from incarceration with customized case management, regular council opportunities and leadership training.

Exploring Toxic Masculinity w/ Richie Reseda
October 26th, 2019
Temescal Gateway Park

Spend the morning diving into council as a group and then following that, we will open up the floor for our special guest, Richie 'Reseda' Edmond Vargas.

Richard Edmond Vargas co-founded Initiate Justice with his wife, Taina Vargas-Edmond, in 2016 while serving 10 years in California state prison. While incarcerated, he founded Success Stories, a program that helps young men in prison challenge patriarchy to better achieve their goals, which was the subject of CNN’s documentary “The Feminist on Cellblock Y.”
