Giving and Receiving Compassion
Our end of the year appeal is to join us in providing support and resources to friends and neighbors returning from incarceration. Please consider helping us distribute Leaving Prison Behind: A Council Before I Go inside prisons throughout California -- and receive a copy of your own as a gift!

This powerful and beautiful illustrated novella compiled and edited by Jared Seide weaves the words and stories of system-impacted individuals, and those who support them. It's an outgrowth of our work inside 28 California state prisons, as well as our Council Reentry Program, and tells a moving story of one man's last night of incarceration, amassing a compendium of resources, ideas, references and practices intended to support the challenging journey home.

Please consider a donation to support our Leaving Prison Behind Campaign -- or make a general donation to help us sustain the inspiring, transformational work of this organization. Your generosity is deeply appreciated!!

POWER Receives National Certification

Center for Council's Peace Officer Wellness, Empathy & Resilience (POWER) Training Program is an innovative new compassion-based interactive curriculum for police and correctional officers that utilizes mindfulness practices and council to train officers to support wellness, relationality and improved police-community relations. In September 2022, POWER received the National Certification Program Seal of Excellence.

In her Medium article, Camilla Patterson offers a deep dive into this dynamic program that combines council training with mindfulness activities to support self-awareness, self-regulation and communication skills. Learn more about Center for Council's experience bringing POWER to seven cohorts of LAPD officers; click HERE to read the article. And, if you have not yet watched it, we've got a powerful video of LAPD officers talking about their experience of POWER - watch the video HERE.

Testimonials

I’ve been around for a while and this is the best training I've been to, bar none. I wish I had access to this stuff earlier in my career.

- Peace Officer Wellness, Empathy & Resilience (POWER) Training participant

Council helped me develop a sense of trust and has helped me empathize and gain insight into my childhood. It put me in a place where I could be vulnerable inside a place you're not supposed to be. I'm forever thankful for it. It's truly helped me on my path.

- Prison Council Initiative participant

It has helped me a great deal to be able to process my feelings and know that I am not alone. It has helped me understand that it is okay to feel the way I feel and has also helped me ease my anxiety. I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to participate.

- Organization Wellness Project participant
