public forums

Center for Council's public event series is aimed at bringing together communities from across Southern California for dynamic conversations around timely topics. We offer regular public screenings and panel discussions with civic leaders, peace-builders, policy makers, and community members with the intention of engaging the Greater Los Angeles community to convene and reflect on ways we can embody compassion in our professional and personal lives, and join in conversations exploring ways to shift beyond the paradigm of “Us” and “Them.” This series of public events creates the space to explore innovative models of convening and communicating and fosters a communal dialogue that recognizes and celebrates our shared humanity and interconnectedness.
Due to Covid-19, our in-person public forums are currently on hold.
Subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to hear about new offerings and opportunities for convening.

Beyond Us and Them
March 14th, 2019 7:00 - 9:00

Center for Council partnered with the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles on Thursday, March 14th, for Beyond Us and Them: How Can We Transcend Our Differences and Reconnect with All We Have In Common?

The evening featured an advance screening of Cops and Communities: Circling Up. The film, an insider’s look at the Center for Council's transformative project of the same name, documents a gathering of law enforcement officers and community activists sharing authentic stories to explore what is possible when we transcend the thinking that our differences must divide us.

After the feature, Center for Council's Jared Seide moderated a panel discussion with peace builder John Paul Lederach, State Senator Holly Mitchell, and Rabbi Yechiel Hoffman.

Beyond Us and Them
March 28th, 2019 7:00 - 9:00

Center for Council partnered with USC on Thursday, March 28th, for Beyond Us and Them: How Can We Transcend Our Differences and Reconnect with All We Have In Common?

The evening included a screening of Cops and Communities: Circling Up, a short documentary produced by Center for Council capturing the transformative work of the organization's project of the same name. Following the screening, Center for Council executive director, Jared Seide, moderated an interactive panel discussion with Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries; Deputy Chief Tingirides (Ret.) of the LAPD; Samuel Escobar, a leader of Center for Council’s programming during his incarceration in state prisons; and LAPD Lieutenant Gena Brooks, supervisor of a cohort of officers who have been participating in Center for Council’s officer training program.
